Union City Hosts Hometown Connection with GMA Partners

Post Date:12/16/2019 9:17 AM

2019 Union City Hometown Connection

Union City, in partnership with the Georgia Municipal Association, GMA, hosted a Hometown Connection on Tuesday, December 10, 2019, where City administration and local leaders met with elected officials to present projects designed to move the City forward and enhance the quality of life for residents and businesses.

Hometown Connection is based on a simple premise- relationships between city officials and legislators are vital to growth and advancement of Georgia cities. Mayor Vince Williams, who was elected as GMA’s 1st Vice President earlier this year, noted,

“Hometown Connection is about creating a localized, identifiable and understandable frame of reference towards the challenges and opportunities facing Georgia’s cities. When our legislators see what we are doing, it enhances connection and a better understanding of achievements and challenges . It also provides insight regarding why home rule is so important to cities and their locally elected officials. If we don’t make these Hometown Connections, the General Assembly will continue to legislate without knowing the real-life ramifications of their decisions in our cities. Thanks to our dynamic Legislative Delegation for their support and to the Georgia Municipal Association and this very important initiative.”

Union City’s Hometown Connection began at the new Coca-Cola UNITED facility on Mason Road with a networking breakfast and presentations by development partners Pendleton Group and Portman Architects. Attendees were then provided a tour at the ASOS facility on Derrick Industrial Parkway, along with a brief City tour showcasing the Wisdom Bridge art sculpture on Shannon Parkway and gateway signs emphasizing the shared highways and partnership between Union City and the City of Fairburn. The event concluded with the unveiling of the new Etris-Darnell Senior Center sign and guided tours of the award-winning Gathering Place.

More than 30 people participated in the event, including State Representatives Derrick Jackson, William Boddie, Debra Bazemore and Sharon Beasley-Teague along with representatives from Congressman David Scott’s office. Additional attendees were local leaders from Fulton County Government, South Fulton Chamber of Commerce, Aerotropolis Atlanta, Georgia Department of Economic Development, the Collaborative Firm, Atlanta Airport Chamber and City of Decatur.
