Mayor Vince Williams Issues Updated Adjustments to City Operations and Closures

Union City, GA  (March 16, 2020) - The City of Union City is committed to the safety and well-being of our residents, businesses, staff members and visitors.  Essential to this commitment is open communication with our community about COVID-19 (Coronavirus).  Critical steps are necessary in following the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control.  Careful planning is being used to determine the measures we are taking regarding the adjustments to our operations including event cancellations, and closings.  Health and safety remain as the City’s highest priority.

Actions Taken by the City

  • All City facilities will be closed to the public until further notice
  • The UC Emergency Operations Team is proactively monitoring public health information and response efforts are being coordinated with federal, state, and local authorities
  • The City is procuring and maintaining inventory levels of supplies such as sanitizers, cleansers and personal protective equipment for firefighters, police officers and city staff
  • Enhanced cleaning and sanitizing procedures are being implemented throughout City facilities and vehicles
  • The Human Resources Department will begin the planning process of working with Department Directors to allow non-essential city employees to telecommute, work from home or report on staggered schedules
  • To further reduce person-to-person contact, water utility payments will be accepted online, by mail, or via the City’s drop box located adjacent to City Hall; The City will not execute turn-offs for water services for the next 60 days
  • A dedicated web page ( regarding the virus was launched to serve as a core area of communication for citizens.  The page includes information regarding prevention and how to subscribe to important alerts as well as links to the CDC and the Department of Public Health
  • The following events are postponed until further notice:
    • Parks and Recreation programming
    • Senior programming
    • Union City Municipal Court (Effective Monday, March 16, 2020, all court hearing will be suspended for thirty (30) days; First appearance hearings will be held by video as needed; Additional information will be posted via the City's web site)
    • State of the City Address (Previously Scheduled March 17, 2020)
  •  The following events are canceled:
    • Opening Day Baseball Parade

Recommended Steps for the Public:

  • Follow the safety and sanitation practices outlined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention ( and GA Department of Health (
  • Practice social distancing by avoiding events and large gatherings when possible and practical
  • Limit travel; those who visited areas with confirmed cases of COVID-19 and are displaying ill symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath) are encouraged to access medical assistance immediately)
  • Remain calm, considerate, deliberate, and thoughtful about behavior and the impact on the safety of others
  • Stay connected with Union City through social media, city website, E-notifications, and the city’s mobile app (UC Connection) for updates and alerts; Steps to subscribe may be found via the City’s web site; Tips and notifications will also be posted on the city‘s operated digital gateway banner
  • The situation we are facing is ever-changing. We ask the community to follow the health guidelines outlined by the CDC and the GA Department of Public Health.
