In early 2017, the Department purchased “Riko”, a 4½ year old Belgian Malinois. Along with his handler, Master Patrol Officer James Messer, “Riko” underwent seven weeks of rigorous and intensive training. At the conclusion of the training, “Riko” was certified to detect and locate a variety of controlled substances, track and catch criminals, locate missing persons, conduct building searches, and provide protection for his handler.
Officer James Messer was selected to serve as the K9 handler due to his interest and previous experience working with police dogs.
Officer Messer and “Riko” are available to conduct demonstrations and present educational programs at schools, day camps, and other organized events. Anyone interested in scheduling a K9 demonstration or education program should contact Master Patrol Officer James Messer at (770) 515-7991 or email email@example.com.
